Nonreligious thoughts on Christian Spirituality.
Teaching in a Christian school has been interesting for me. I didn't go to one and always swore I'd never send my own kids to one. I don't believe that as Christians we need to spend so much time and effort protecting our children from the evils of the world. Making our own special schools or locking up our dear wives to the tyranny of home school. Withdrawing further and further from society and then bitching when Christianity becomes irrelevant to that same society.
Donald Miller has written a great book to get us thinking about what is the relevancy of Christian Spirituatily and challenges us to think about the practical aspects of how we live out our faith. This is the first of his books I read and I enjoyed it enough to do another. I was introduced to him by my sister in law this summer at the annual campout. She was reading another of his books and I blew through a few chapters on the beach. He's is funny and direct. Honest about his own faith and struggles. It's always been a shame that so many of us Christians are unable to admit the sins and struggles we face instead relying on our latest designer cloths or IKEA catalog to send the message the we have everything under control. Nothing to see here folks we are holy and without blemish. Yea right.
If you looking for a fresh perspective on your Christian walk give this book a read. Just be ready for a big dose of conviction to head your way.

Ya, good book!
I adore this book! His next one Searching for God Knows What is pretty good too. I've got my HS girls reading it for a book club. I'm glad you liked it!
Interesting... I read the interview with Willamete Week and kept wondering who this guy is. He's got a link to MoveOn.org on his website and got arrested at a anti-Bush rally? You definitely can't pigeonhole him. Hey if he can coexist and connect with the nutters of Portland then he gets a hat tip from me. I'm curious enough to check out his book.
I think living like a bohemian is one explanation for his beliefs, either that or the horrible Portland water.

You don't have to like Bush to be a Christian.
I think he definitely doesn't agree with the mainstream politics but his ideas on God seem to be pretty theologically safe.
True, but he's got such a liberal slant from living in Portland that I question his motives, politics aside. God loves to use all kinds of people and it sounds like he fills a definite void in the most unchurched city in America our beloved Ptown.
I don't care who you vote for D or R, heck I think most politicians are self centered and more interested in preserving their own power and not the will of the people. I have a friend who's proudly a Democrat, but he's very unique in that he is also very conservative. I tell him I'd vote for him anyday. It's the liberal ideas that scare me, like these judges who are ruling from the bench ie 9th circuit and our own wacked out Oregon Supreme court. He makes it sound like it's such a bad thing to be a conservative that I'm afraid he's painting too broad a stroke. ...Perhaps I should read his book before passing judgement, but they say you can get an impression of someone within the first few minutes of encountering them. With that said, I think I may go to Powells today and look for his book, Emily inquired that she would like to read it as well.
